Major brawl at Perak restaurant leads to 23 arrests, including of SPM candidates

SUNGAI SIPUT: Almost two dozen people were involved in a major scuffle in front of a restaurant at Persiaran Waterfront here, early today.

The altercation was apparently triggered by a misunderstanding between two groups of males, aged between 17 and 26.

Police, who were alerted to the situation by a distress call from a member of the public, arrived at the scene at 1.30am.

Up to 23 boys and men were rounded up and arrested at the scene.

Among those detained were two Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates.

“Three of the individuals also tested positive for methamphetamine,” said Sungai Siput district police chief Superintendent Mohd Khaizam Ahmad Shahabudin.

He added that police have obtained a four-day remand order against the group; and that the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Mohd Khaizam was speaking during a pinning of rank event, during which 43 senior police officers were promoted to the rank of Assistant commissioner.
