Education Ministry to set up database to empower TVET

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will set up a database to empower and improve Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET).

The database, which will be jointly developed by nine ministries that are members of the national-level TVET Empowerment Committee (JKKPTVET), is part of an effort by the government to produce 35 per cent high-skilled work force by next year.

The database will help the government project employment opportunities and focus on critical market segments.

“The committee, which is chaired by Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, convened its second meeting here on Nov 26.

“During the meeting, which was held to deliberate on ways to intensify and empower TVET campaign at the national level, it was also announced that the International Trade and Industry Ministry has become the ninth and latest member of the committee,” the ministry said in a statement today.

Other ministries that are also members of the committee are Human Resources, Youth and Sports; Works, Rural Development, Entrepreneur Development, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

“A total of 20 strategies and 15 recommendations have been outlined and slotted under five thrusts of TVET programmes.

“This is to create an ecosystem that will help the government achieve its aspiration of having 35 per cent high-skilled work force (of the total work force) by next year.

“The five thrusts, namely National TVET Coordination Body, Sustainable Financing Module, Industrial Partnership Module, Empowering TVET Certification (industry) and National TVET Rebranding initiative, have been implemented to equip people with skills,” the ministry said.

Other activities carried out to promote TVET programmes included four series of exhibition tours and industry dialogues which have attracted some 5,000 participants.
