Floods worsen in Kelantan and Terengganu

KOTA BARU: The fourth day of floods in Kelantan saw number of evacuees continues to rise, with the number now rising to 6,799 as of 11.30am, compared to 6,598 recorded at 8am this morning.

The Welfare Department's flood disaster portal said the flood victims, from 2,311 families, are now housed at 74 relief centres in eight districts.

Pasir Mas recorded the highest evacuees of 3,225 people, followed by Kuala Krai (971) and Pasir Putih (654).

Other affected areas are Bachok, Machang, Tanah Merah and Kota Baru.

Meanwhile, the body of the first flood victim who went missing after he slipped and fell into a drain at Felcra Teratak Batu in Pasir Putih, has been recovered this morning.

The body of seven-year-old Muhamad Eilham Hasmadi was found at 8am by his family members in a paddy field about 400m from the spot where he was reported missing.

Eilham was following his father to lay fishing net near a paddy field when the incident happened at about 6.20pm.

Pasir Putih Fire Services and Rescue station operation chief Azhar Elmi Mustofar said the boy was believed to have fallen into a one-metre deep drain and was swept by the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, four rivers in Kelantan exceeded their respective danger marks as of 8am this morning.

They are Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang which recorded at 10.42m, Sungai Golok in Jenob (24.32m), Sungai Kelantan in Kusial (16.02m) and Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai (25.19m).

Sungai Lebir in Tualang has risen above the warning level at 33.96 m (warning level is 31 m).

Meanwhile, Sungai Galas at Limau Kasturi and Dabong, and Sungai Kelantan at the Customs Jetty showed readings that exceeded the alert level.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, the flood situation seems to worsen with a drastic increase in the number of evacuees, from 2,387 people (650 families) last night to 5,807 people (1,719 families) as at 8am today.

A total of 55 flood relief centres were opened since early today to accommodate the new evacuees, bringing to 121 the total number of flood evacuation centres that were opened since floods hit the state.

Terengganu Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lieutenant Colonel Che Adam A Rahman said Besut is the worst affected district, with 1,787 evacuees (484 families) at 45 relief centres, from 1,312 evacuees (345 families) at 31 relief centres last night.

"The floods in Hulu Terengganu also worsens with 18 new relief centres opened since early today to accommodate 1,751 evacuees (553 families), from 296 evacuees (94 families) at 15 relief centres last night. This brings to 33 the total number of flood relief centres in the Hulu Terengganu district.

“Setiu also recorded an increase in the number of flood evacuees, from only 296 people (94 families) at 15 relief centres last night, to 1,691 people (523 families) at 28 relief centres today,’ he said.

According to the Drainage and Irrigation Department’s website http://publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my/, five rivers in three districts recorded readings of above the danger level at 7am today.

Two of the rivers are in Setiu, namely Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap and Sungai Setiu in Kampung Besut.

The other rivers are Sungai Berang at Kampung Menerong and Sungai Telemong at Kuala Ping, both in Hulu Terengganu, and Sungai Besut at Kampung La in Besut.

In KUANTAN, the flood situation in Pahang remains the same with three people still at a relief centre in Rompin.
