Big rise in number of flood evacuees in Terengganu

KUANTAN: The worsening floods in Terengganu have forced more evacuees to seek shelter at flood relief centres across the state.

As of noon today, the disaster management agency (Nadma) said 6,028 victims from 1,835 families are now at 123 centres across seven districts, compared to 3,471 (976 families) at midnight.

The seven affected districts are Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun, Kemaman, Marang and Kuala Nerus.

Besut has the most number of evacuees with 1,942 people from 525 families at 50 relief centres. Previously, 37 shelters accommodated 1,503 people from 400 families.

The number of victims in Setiu has also risen, from 303 (95 families) to 1,785 (544 families). The families are now seeking shelter at 30 centres across the district, compared to 15 centres last night.

Hulu Terengganu accounts for 1,679 victims from 295 families at 26 centres as of noon today. Previously, there were 1,253 victims (369 families) seeking shelter at 25 centres.

In Dungun, the number of evacuation centres increased from three to eight as of afternoon. There are currently 352 people from 101 families.

Previously, there were 254 people from 72 families.

In Kemaman, five centres have been operating since last night with 183 victims from 52 families. This is an increase from last night’s 71 victims from 21 families at only one centre.

In Marang and Kuala Nerus, the number of victims and centres remained unchanged since midnight.

There are 71 victims from 16 families at two centres in Marang, while Kuala Nerus has 16 victims from three families seeking shelter at two centres.
