High tide warning for Terengganu, Kelantan

KUALA TERENGGANU: The good news is there will be little or no rain between tomorrow and Dec 29, thus reducing the possibility of a third round of floods.

However, during the same period the tide along the state’s coast is predicted to reach a height of 2.5 metres, making it dangerous to even walk along the beach.

State Civil Defence Force deputy director Major (CD) Syed Azam Shah Syed Baharom said: “The tide of 2.5 metres will occur during the period, but the lack of wind is not expected to support the occurrence of rough seas.

“However, we are prepared to face emergencies such as flooding during the monsoon period, which is expected to end only in March, next year” said Syed Azman.

He said the high tide phenomenon could be dangerous and advised the public to avoid walking along the beach, especially at night.

“Based on past experience, some people who wanted to have a closer look at the high tide phenomenon stopped by the roadside along the beach in Seberang Takir.

“They created unnecessary traffic congestion and some took their children and families to walk along the beach.

“They can be easily be swept away by rough waves which comes unexpectedly,” he added.

Syed Azman said his men would be on standby to warn public about the danger and would advise them to move on to prevent traffic congestion.

In Kelantan, 30 villagers, including 10 children in Pantai Pulau Kundur, here, are in danger of losing their homes and even their lives should another high tide phenomenon occur.

Their houses are located just some 50m from the sea and their fears are compounded by the damage to the granite embankment caused by rough seas during the early phase of the monsoon late last month.
