Pahang influenza cases rise to 10

KUANTAN: Pahang has recorded an increase in influenza cases with 10 primary school pupils being infected compared to five yesterday.

State Education Department director Datuk Dr Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said three of them had been hospitalised while the remaining pupils were being observed at home.

He said Kuantan recorded five cases, two in Cameron Highlands and one each in Bentong, Jerantut and Raub.

"So far, no classes or schools have been closed. However, the respective schools have been instructed to monitor their pupil’s health progress and keep the district education office updated.

"The related district health offices had been informed and they are taking the necessary control measures to prevent the spread of infection," he said in a statement today.

It was reported yesterday that five primary school pupils were down with influenza compared to only two from Raub and Cameron Highlands respectively on Saturday.

It was previously reported that a one-year-old girl in Temerloh died last month after testing positive for H1N1 while her twin brother was warded at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital (Hoshah) Intensive Care Unit and discharged on Jan 11.

Meanwhile, a district education department spokesman said majority of parents were keeping their children at home as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease.

"Fearing the spread of the virus, some parents whose children are down with flu have decided to allow their children to rest at home. However, the Health Department confirmed that the virus was still under control in Pahang and parents should not panic," he said.
