Education Ministry, Jakim have no issue holding Ponggal festival

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry today made it clear that it does not prevent Ponggal festival being held in schools.

In reference to its letter dated Jan 13, the ministry said the letter was issued to alleviate the concerns of Muslim parents in the involvement of their children during the said celebration.

"The statement has taken into account the stance and guidelines issued by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim)," it said in a statement today.

Ponggal is celebrated by Indians after the first harvest as a mark of gratitude for the produce. Many Tamils consider it as the new year.

The ministry added it recognised schools were a place to foster unity among the multicultural community in Malaysia.

"The culture and customs of the people must be known, understood and respected by all, including school administrators, teachers and students.

"To instil a spirit of tolerance, understanding and mutual respect among the different races and faiths, the ministry encourages school participation in all cross cultural activities," it said.

The ministry also reminded those involved to abide by the rules if they intend to hold a special festive celebration in schools.

In a statement by Jakim, it said the view expressed was in response to the ministry's request for guidelines for the Muslims involved in the celebration.

The department said it only gave its views on the matter and had never prevented the festival to be held.

Its Shariah Expert Panel, it added, also of the opinion Muslims should wish their friends and neighbours for their celebrations without the intention of recognising their religion.

Also, Jakim said Muslims were prohibited from ridiculing and insulting other faiths' gods.
