Free breakfast programme to focus on less fortunate

KUALA LUMPUR: The free breakfast programme by the Education Ministry will proceed as planned next Monday with more focus given to the less unfortunate, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

He said this when asked if the programme would continue since he took over the Education portfolio temporarily following Dr Maszlee Malik’s recent resignation as its minister.

“We will continue the programme we have for the less fortunate.

“If we want to provide (breakfast) for all, it means we will be giving them to those who are rich and able to eat at home.

“That’s not fair. We will give it to those who deserve it,” he said after opening Kompleks Balai Islam Tenaga Nasional Berhad here today in conjunction with the power provider’s 70th anniversary.

Previously the Education Ministry said that the free breakfast programme for primary school children would be conducted in phases and at the same time focusing on students whose parents are categorised under the bottom 40 (B40) group.
