PM gets glimpse of 5G demo in Langkawi, happy with progress

LANGKAWI: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is happy with the 5G implementation at the Pulau Langkawi demo sites.

“In the two days I have visited and seen how 5G is used in many aspects of the island management. I am so far happy with how things are implemented.

“I am impressed with the benefits of 5G technology and how things are run. Things are more efficient. From agricultural, education, the medical aspect, city management and also security," he said.

Dr Mahathir said this to reporters after visiting the 5G Command Centre at Langkawi police headquarters.

The 5G project at the police command centre is managed by Celcom.

One of its 5G project coverage is related to the security aspects on the island among them facial recognition, the ability to identify a potential suspect with facial points verification.

Others include peer analysis, the ability to identify suspects via cross matching video analysis and vehicle analysis.

The prime minister had earlier visited the 5G Control Centre (5GCC) or 5G Demonstration Project Command Centre at Langkawi’s District and Land office.

The 5GCC project site was managed by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM). TM projects monitor the smart city aspect of 5G usage by monitoring the smart traffic light at Jalan Persiaran Putra, smart safety and surveillance in Pantai Chenang, and smart parking along Jalan Pantai Chenang amongst the many initiatives.

TM’s 5G projects also provides monitoring and improvement of traffic flow by reducing wait times in traffic lights and improving traffic congestion.

Dr Mahathir officially launched the 5G Malaysia Demonstration Projects here on Sunday.
