EC: 2,400 secondary schools nationwide to be involved in voter education system [NSSTV]

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has pledged to intensify its engagement with secondary schools nationwide on the voter education system.

Putting it as one of the commission's top priorities for this year, its chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said they would conduct simulation of the election with Form four students soon.

The module has been prepared for the engagement.

"We did a trial run last year in secondary schools and it was well received. Many other schools have written to us asking for the same engagement.

"The module is ready and we will make it (module) public soon so nobody will allege that we are trying to indoctrinate the people.

"We want to educate the students and the public on the system," he told a press conference after receiving a courtesy call from the Special Select Committee on Election and Special Select Committee on Public Appointments delegation at his office here.

Asked why the commission did not conduct the engagement with form five students instead, he said the commission had previously carried it out with those students and they did not want to interfere with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination.

He said the commission would engage with a total 2,400 schools nationwide.

Asked on the status of the tender for the automatic registration system and Undi 18, he said the commission had no details.

Meanwhile, on the e-voting system, Azhar said they were still engaging with the experts to obtain more details and discussions on the matter.

"I'm worried about the security aspect on this. Hence we are still discussing with the experts and those involved in the matter.

"We want to convince the voters that their votes can go through the system safely.

"We need to thoroughly look at it before making any decision," he said.
