Private cars using second bridge to enjoy 10 per cent discount on Saturday

PENANG: Private cars using second bridge to enjoy 10 per cent discount this Saturday

GEORGE TOWN: All Class 1 vehicles will get to enjoy a 10 per cent discount when using the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge on Chinese New Year on Saturday.

Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) chief executive officer Faisal Shahbudin said the 10 per cent discount, which begins from midnight until 11.59pm, was to appreciate the bridge users on their "balik kampung".

"This is not only a part of our corporate social responsibility but a way for us to thank all our loyal users," he told newsmen when met at the launching of the road safety advocacy campaign in conjunction with Chinese New Year, organised by the Road Safety Department (JKJR) Penang at the second bridge toll plaza here.

At present, all Class 1 vehicles are paying RM7 toll, Class 2 (RM30.50), Class 3 (RM70.10) while taxis and buses RM8.50 and RM26.20 each.

On Jan 1, the toll charge for Class 1 vehicles using the bridge will drop from RM8.50 to RM7.

The reduction is part of a nationwide standardisation of toll charges for Class 1 private vehicles, in line with the announcement made by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng during the tabling of Budget 2020 on Oct 11.

Following the reduction, JKSB, the concessionaire of the bridge, is expecting more private vehicles to use the bridge.

Traffic at the bridge was at 3.4 million when it was first opened in 2014, 4.8 million (2015), 6.1 million (2016), 8.1 million (2017), 9.8 million (2018) and 9.5 million for the first 11 months of last year.
