Former MAS managing director dies

KUALA LUMPUR: The former managing director of Malaysia Airlines Bhd, Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman died last night from cancer complications. He was 87.

The death was confirmed by National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (NUFAM) on its official Facebook page this morning.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the family and relatives of the late Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, who passed away peacefully late last night,” NUFAM said.

“His contributions will always be remembered by all MAS employees. May his soul rest in peace.”

The funeral prayers will be held at the Saidina Umar Mosque in Bukit Damansara here this morning before his remains are laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery nearby.

Abdul Aziz was the first managing director of MAS. He had served the airline since its inception in 1971, first as company secretary. It can be said that Abdul Aziz knew MAS like “the back of his hand”.

“Civil aviation is close to my heart. I think it is a God-given talent. I don’t think there is anyone alive today who specialises in this,” Abdul Aziz was quoted as saying in an interview with New Straits Times last year.
