Malaysia Covid-19 toll rises to 15 deaths, 1,624 infections

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry today announced 106 new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, bringing the tally of infections to 1,624.

The country also recorded one new fatality, raising the death toll to 15.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the new cases, 43 are related to the Sri Petaling mosque tabligh cluster.

The remaining 63 cases are linked to other clusters which are still under investigation.

“As for the fatality, we recorded one case today involving a 71-year-old man (Case 1,519), believed to have had close contact with Case 703, a tabligh participant.

“The victim had a history of chronic illness and started treatment at the Sultanah Fatimah specialist hospital in Muar on Mar 18.

“He was pronounced dead at 5.35am today,” Dr Noor Hisham said during a daily press conference on the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that 24 cases had recovered and were discharged today, bringing the total number of cured cases to 183.

“As of today, 64 Covid-19 cases are being treated at the intensive care unit, with 27 cases requiring ventilators to aid with breathing,” he said.

To date, Selangor has the highest number of Covid-19 cases at 381, followed by Kuala Lumpur (257), Sabah (170), and Johor (162).

Negri Sembilan has recorded 109 cases, Perak (98), Sarawak (83), Kelantan (78), Penang (68), Kedah (64), Pahang (56), Terengganu (38), Melaka (31), Putrajaya (15), Perlis (9) and Labuan (5).
