PBAPP: Claim Penang water supply will soon cease is 'fake news'

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has assured consumers that it will continue to supply water during the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

This assurance follows an audio recording which recently emerged on social media and has since gone viral, claiming that water supply operations in Penang will be halted soon.

A police report has been lodged regarding the “fake news”.

“PBAPP would like to state clearly that the allegation is unfounded, untrue and irresponsible. It is fake news,” its chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said today.

He said PBAPP personnel will continue to work daily to meet the people’s needs.

“We are committed to doing (our) jobs, despite facing higher risks daily, because people need water every day.

“We must ensure that the people have sufficient water to use, as they stay at home and wash their hands regularly, to stay safe from Covid-19 infection.”

The MCO, which came into effect on March 18, will end on April 14.

PBAPP, according to Jaseni, is adhering to the Penang government’s policy of “no water rationing”, especially when the people have been told to stay at home to break Covid-19’s chain of infection.

“We are continuing to operate normally, striving to supply water to all 631,250 registered water consumers in Penang, albeit with dry weather controls in place.”

As of Thursday, the water level at the Air Itam dam was 37.2 per cent, the Teluk Bahang dam (23.1 per cent) and the Mengkuang dam (69.3 per cent).
