Another Sarawak politician contracts Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR: Another politician from Sarawak – Kota Samarahan Member of Parliament Rubiah Wang – has tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus.

According to a local English daily in the state, the matter was confirmed by Sarawak Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at a press conference on Covid-19 yesterday.

"As far as we know, an Assistant Minister and a Member of Parliament are confirmed as Covid-19 positive," he said.

This makes Rubiah the third Sarawak politician to contract Covid-19. The other two officials are Transport Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil (Mambong assemblyman) and Sarikei Member of Parliament Andrew Wong Ling Biu.

Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament Kelvin Yii also tested positive earlier, but has since been discharged from hospital after a week of treatment.

Meanwhile, a number of state ministers are under self-quarantine after attending a meeting on March 27 with an individual who later tested positive for Covid-19.

They are Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chairman and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas; Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; and Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
