Significant use of PPE units at health facilities in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: There is a significant increase in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at healthcare facilities throughout the state since the Covid-19 outbreak.

Sabah Health Department (JKNS) director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi said the estimated use of PPE in hospitals was 1,500 to 2,000 units a day, while health clinics and those in the field use about 3,000 units a day.

"JKNS often receives inquiries regarding the lack of PPE at health facilities. JKNS would like to clarify that in the management and treatment of infectious diseases, the use of PPE is a standard precaution that must be practised.

"It is part of measures to reduce the risk of spreading contagious disease whether by air, contact, fluid or blood. The PPE is non-shareable and non-reusable," she said in a statement.

A complete PPE set, said Rundi, consists of a cap for head protection, gloves, breathing protection (N95 or surgical mask), face shield, insulation gown, plastic apron, and boot cover.

"PPE is a fast-moving item and requires continuous supply. Therefore, JKNS extends its gratitude to all PPE contributors," she said.

Yesterday, Covid-19 cases in Sabah stood at 238 after 13 new infections were reported. It also confirmed one death, involving a 66-year-old Covid-19 patient from Tambunan. He died at Keningau Hospital on April 4.

Rundi also refuted a viral message claiming there was a death related to Covid-19 at PPR Taman Haromoni in Sandakan.

She advised those concerned not to politicise health issues and instead provide support to JKNS as well as the Ministry of Health to contain the coronavirus outbreak.
