KUALA PILAH: Nine-year-old tailor Nur Afia Qistina Zamzuri and her mum, Hasnah Hud, have sewn 130 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) gowns for medical staff at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah (HTAN) here so far.
These PPEs, she said, had been delivered to the staff at the hospital to be used in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We are running out of materials (to sew the PPEs).
"While waiting for new supply of materials from HTAN, Afia and I are keeping ourselves busy completing sewing orders for new clothes to be worn for Hari Raya," said the 38-year-old seamstress.
Afia can sew a full PPE gown in an hour, and her sewing talent caught the attention of Johol state assemblyman, Saiful Yazan Sulaiman.
"I am impressed by Afia's sewing skills. While other children her age are busy playing with their gadgets, Afia has gone above and beyond to help the frontliners.
"I have been told that Afia's two other siblings, aged 4 and 2, are also helping out. This shows their parents' remarkable parenting skills and who knows, one day Afia may go far in the tailoring industry," he said.
It was reported that Afia had learnt to sew at the age of 5.
The young tailor began earning pocket money when she was barely 7 by selling pillowcases and other items.
She sold the items to the community.
