Johor welcomes decision to resume HSR discussion

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The state government has welcomed Malaysia's and Singapore's decision to resume talks on the highspeed rail (HSR) infrastructure project.

Its Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the state government always supported high impact and people-centric projects such as the HSR as it would benefit and bring economic opportunities to both countries, including Johor.

"Once implemented, the project would help in the development of Johor, especially in districts along the project's alignment," said Hasni in a statement.

He said the project would also improve the network and increase the efficiency of the transportation system in the country and state.

"The rapid development in the area would also bring economic spillover effect to the districts and the residents, including traders who would be able to improve their income," said Hasni.

He said the state government would provide all the necessary cooperation and assistance to help realise the project.

On Sunday, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali announced that Malaysia and Singapore had agreed to resume discussions on the HSR infrastructure project.

He said the discussions would encompass some of the proposed changes in the commercial and technical aspects and that the decision was arrived at after both sides had agreed to extend the project's deferment to Dec 31.
