Sabah 'tree girl' gets special gift package from Shopee

KOTA KINABALU: Gifts keep pouring in for 18-year-old Veveonah Mosibin since a video of her climbing a tree to get internet connection to sit for an online exam went viral.

This time, the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student caught the attention of Singaporean e-commerce platform - Shopee, which sent a team over to the remote Kampung Sapatalang in Pitas to meet Veveonah.

The team came bearing a curated Care Package Kit for Veveonah. The kit included a laptop, smartphone, backpack, wireless Bluetooth speaker, headphones, powerbank and smartwatch.

Not only that, Shopee Mall retailer - N4 Camera Store - who learned about Veveonah's interest in YouTube video-making also extended a sponsorship of a tripod and ring light to support her hobby.

Shopee regional managing director Ian Ho, in a statement, said the story of Veveonah, together with her grit and determination, inspired all of them at Shopee to never let any obstacle be an excuse.

"She reminds us that we need to remain agile and adapt to any situation. Veveonah's journey is a compelling story to be shared with many more generations to come. We wish Veveonah all the best in her endeavours," he said.

Expressing her gratitude to Shopee's generosity, Veveonah who is a basic science student said the gifts especially the new laptop came in handy as hers broke down.

"With these new gadgets, I can use them for my studies as well as create better quality videos. I have been editing videos on my handphone, which takes a long time to complete," she added.

Veveonah aspires to be a lecturer but noted she would continue her efforts to become a YouTuber and content creator to spread positivity to the community, including her viewers.

"Besides vlogging, I'm also interested in e-sports live streaming. With the laptop, I am now able to explore streaming games such as Counter-Strike, Dota and Warcraft III," she said.

Veveonah has been dubbed as "tree girl" in many national and international news headlines. Following her viral video, she was also offered a scholarship by UMS to pursue a bachelor's degree.

She also received contributions from Yayasan Nur Jauhar advisor Toh Puan Norlidah R.M jasni, who is the wife of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

Telekom Malaysia also visited Veveonah and upgraded the Pusat Internet Kampung Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas to improve connectivity for the communities.

Understanding that Veveonah's struggles may extend to many other youths, Shopee has also curated a Shopee Sapot Lokal Bah! campaign from July 16 to 18 specially for all Sabahans.

The campaign will exclusively feature products from Sabah traders as well as S-Mart Sabah with attractive vouchers for home essentials, fashion items, gadgets and more to showcase what the Land Below the Wind has to offer to Malaysians.
