Malls, public transport operators encourage face masks

KUALA LUMPUR: Some shopping complexes and public transport operators have made it compulsory for visitors and passengers to wear face masks although it is not mandatory during the Recovery Movement Control Order period.

Checks by the New Sunday Times found that some shopping complexes and public transport operators, however, did not regulate the wearing of face masks when people entered their premises or terminals.

However, people were required to scan the QR code for the MySejahtera or Selangkah mobile applications, input their particulars and have their body temperature checked before entering.

Sunway Malls chief operating officer Kevin Tan said visitors were encouraged to wear face masks when they enter the company's shopping malls since it was among the recommended precautionary measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

"If a visitor comes without wearing a face mask, we will provide one or encourage them to get one at the nearest outlet to protect the health and safety of shoppers.

"Throughout our malls, we have placed human-sized cutout boards of our staff holding notices with safety advice, which includes reminding them to stay 1.5m away from other people.

"We have placed floor stickers to manage queues and character cardboards on seats to limit seating capacity," he told the NST.

Sunway Malls, he said, was the only group of malls to introduce social distancing officers to ensure visitors adhere to social distancing rules.

"This is extended to our retailers, so they have appointed social distancing officers within their stores as well."

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said the wearing of face masks was not compulsory for users of public transport services operated by the group.

"Commuters are encouraged to wear it as most public transport services, including those run by Prasarana, are operating at full capacity.

"If the wearing of face masks is made compulsory, passengers will be protected from the virus."

Prasarana operates the country's urban rail services, which include three Light Rail Transit networks, the KL Monorail Line and the Mass Rapid Transit line.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB), the country's largest rail service, made it compulsory for passengers to wear face masks.

"There are passengers that did not comply with the face mask requirement. Enforcement on face masks will be made from time to time," said KTMB corporate communications chief Ahmad Asri Khalbi.
