Police to arrest 2,897 people who failed to show up for second Covid-19 test

KUALA LUMPUR: Starting Monday, police will arrest and prosecute 2,897 people who failed to show up for their second Covid-19 test on the 13th day of their compulsory home quarantine.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said individuals placed under the mandatory home quarantine had been instructed to contact the nearest health district office for a second Covid-19 test.

Ismail Sabri, who is also the Senior Defence Minister, said 9,600 people are still observing the compulsory quarantine at their respective homes.

"Officers from the Health Ministry together with the police will conduct spot-checks to ensure all people instructed to observe the mandatory quarantine at their respective homes complied with the standard operating procedures (SOPs)," he said in a statement today.

He added starting today, all returnees from abroad whether Malaysians or non-citizens permitted to enter the country would observe their 14-day compulsory quanrantine at centres designated by the government.

"A total of 319 people from abroad returned to the country via the international entry point yesterday from Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Qatar, Pakistan, Arab Saudi, Hong Kong, India, United Arab Emirates, China and Australia.

"All of them have been placed at four quarantine centres in Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan and Johor," he said.

The decision to reopen quarantine centres for returnees from abroad to undergo the mandatory quarantine, he said, was made following the rise in the number of Covid-19 imported cases and non-compliance of the SOPs among certain people in the community.
