Tabling of Transboundary Haze Act shelved

KUALA LUMPUR: The tabling of the Transboundary Haze Act which was mooted by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government has been shelved, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in his wrap-up speech said the decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on July 24.

"This decision was made after taking into consideration Singapore's experience and views from legal experts including the Attorney-General's Chamber.

"Action can only be taken against Malaysian-owned companies operating abroad if there is clear evidence obtained."

He however said evidence like land owners, maps, location coordinates of the forest burning would not be shared by the countries where haze originated as it would have implication on their security and sovereignty.

"The government believes that the best step is to enhance cooperation with neighbouring countries and Asean," he said.
