Lam Thye: Adopt the new normal to keep Covid-19 at bay

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have been reminded to play an important role in adopting and practicing the new normal as well as continuing to abide the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the Covid-19 outbreak.

Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the people should not be complacent as the nation is still struggling in its fight against the virus.

"Everyone should play a part here. We should not only depend on the government's initiatives and assistance but all of us should cultivate good habits such as abiding to the SOPs, exercising high hygiene standards and putting the new normal into practice.

"Having to emulate the new normal is not an easy task, particularly in crowded areas such as the night and wet market.

"As I observe the situation everyday, the public still does not practice the physical distancing set by the government. I still see people shaking hands, hugging each other and some don't even wear face mask.

"I hope the embracing new norms campaign launched by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today will be a reminder to everyone that the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet," he said.

The social activist also urged the government to continue conducting enforcement at crowded places such as the night and wet markets to ensure the public abide by the SOPs.

Lee also hoped that the government would ensure that all premises and places to have in place the MySejahtera application for ease of contact tracing exercise.

"Everyone owns a mobile phone now and they can just scan the MySejahtera QR code before entering an area. This initiative is good and effective," he said.

Muhyiddin launched the Embracing New Norms campaign at Kompleks Sukan Pagoh in Pagoh, Johor.

In his speech, he urged the people to continue embracing the new normal in everyday life although the drastic measures introduced previously by the government had managed to control and prevent the Covid-19 outbreak from escalating in the country.
