512 nabbed, mostly at nightclubs, for violating RMCO on Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR: Most of the 512 people nabbed for violating the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) on Saturday were attending pubs, nightclubs and private parties.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said of the total, 452 were issued compounds, while 59 were remanded, and one was granted bail.

Among the offences were patronising pubs and night clubs (294), attending private parties (56), failure to keep visitor logs (32), not wearing face masks (14), operating beyond permitted hours (eight), suspected involvement in prostitution (four), attending activities hindering physical distancing (103), and breaking quarantine (one).

"The task force on SOP led by police conducted 58,393 inspections yesterday," said the Senior Defence Minister in a statement today.

A total of 2,663 compliance task forces conducted checks nationwide yesterday involving 171,825, personnel he said.

Checks were conducted at 3,989 supermarkets, 5,405 restaurants, 1,146 factories, 3,860 banks, and 663 government offices.

Also checked were 1,146 land, 211 water and 108 air transport terminals.

On Op Benteng, Ismail Sabri said the authorities yesterday mounted 82 roadblocks involving the police (57), the Malaysian Border Security Agency (10), and the armed forces (15) nationwide in a bid to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country especially via rat lanes, or illegal routes.

He added that 80 illegal immigrants, six smugglers and one tekong (boat captain) were arrested during the operations.

"Twenty of the illegal immigrants were nabbed at Sungai Nipah Haji Dorani, Sungai Besar, Selangor by armed forces personnel for not having valid identification documents.

"The government will take action against those who attempt to enter the country illegally and will not compromise with those who are in cahoots with illegal immigrants."

Op Benteng involves the Armed Forces, police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Malaysian Border Security Agency (AKSEM), which joined forces to ensure that the country's borders are safeguarded; and to eliminate cross-border crimes and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Ismail Sabri said between July 24 and Sept 12, a total of 28,063 people returned to Malaysia via various entry points, and were later sent to quarantine centres at 69 hotels and other premises, including public training institutes and private higher education institutions, in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Johor, Sarawak, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Terengganu, Sabah and Labuan.

"Of the total (returnees), 10,187 are currently undergoing the 14-day mandatory quarantine, while 69 others were sent to hospital for treatment. A total of 17,807 individuals have been discharged and allowed to return home."

The travellers returned from 32 countries, namely, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, India, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Japan, Turkey, South Korea, Iran, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Taiwan, China, United Kingdom, Holland, Papua New Guinea, Egypt, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand and the United States

He said 9,930 sanitisation operations were conducted in 134 zones nationwide since March 30.

A total of 12,988 premises have been sanitized, comprising 2,710 business centres, 5,716 government buildings, 1,597 residential schemes (including PPRs), 2,611 public places and 354 supermarkets.

"Yesterday, five operations were conducted in five green zones in Sabah (two), Penang (two) and Melaka (one). The operations involved seven personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and 88 staff from local governments. One fire engine was used in the operations."

Ismail Sabri said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) also carried out inspections on Saturday on 12 daily essential items at 698 premises, including 490 retailers, 177 wholesalers and 31 manufacturers.

"KPDNHEP enforcement staff also conducted 1,159 operations on SOP compliance checks. Of the total, 1,151 premises complied with SOPs under the RMCO, while eight others were advised for non-compliance.

"The government urges operators and the public to always practise physical distancing and good hygiene, especially during retail activities."
