Covid-19: Education Ministry given power to decide on school closure

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has been given the authority to take appropriate follow-up measures, including ordering school closure, in the event Covid-19 cases are detected in schools.

However, this can only be done after the ministry discusses the matter with the Health Ministry, said Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"I believe the Education Ministry will eventually be making the announcements on school-related matters after taking into account public opinion on the related issues.

"I believe they will announce their decision and determine the next course of action," he told a press conference today.

Following the recent surge in Malaysia's Covid-19 cases, a number of parents have urged the government to close all schools nationwide to curb transmission of the virus.

Several schools in Terengganu, Kedah, Labuan and Kuala Lumpur have been closed after their students and teachers tested positive for Covid-19.
