Govt clears AirAsia over allegation of sale of customers' personal data

KUALA LUMPUR: The Personal Data Protection Department has found no issue of disclosure and breach of personal data in AirAsia Group Bhd's sales of digital assets to an American company.

The department said it received an explanation regarding the business deal and was satisfied with AirAsia's justifications.

"We were informed that there were no leakages and data sales as a result of the deal. The department is satisfied with AirAsia's explanation of the transaction," it said in a statement.

However, it added that any sales involving personal data are an offence categorised under Section 130 of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and will be fined RM500,000 or three years of imprisonment, or both, if found guilty.

The department issued the statement following reports on the possibility of the sale after news about the deal were made public.

AirAsia CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said last week that an American lender was willing to loan the group US$1 billion (RM4.14 billion) for its digital assets.
