Swift action by LUAS prevents yet another Klang Valley water disruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Swift action by the Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) to resolve two water pollution incidents in Sungai Kundang and Tasik Putrajaya has prevented yet another unscheduled water disruption in the Klang Valley.

Selangor Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Orang Asli Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said odour pollution was detected at Sungai Kundang at 10.45am yesterday.

"Investigations by LUAS authorities found that the odour which originated from biodiesel substances, and recorded at over 10 TON (Threshold Odour Number), was suspected to have come from the Kundang Jaya Industrial Area.

"Further investigations by LUAS and Air Selangor discovered a premises was releasing odour up to 10 TON at its endpoint.

"LUAS has issued a Letter of Order to the premises under Section 121(1) of the LUAS Enactment 1999 to stop effluent discharge immediately and to carry out cleaning operations."

Hee said LUAS has also conducted a deodorising exercise by placing 12 bags of 300kg activated carbon to control the pollution at Sungai Kundang.

"Samples were taken at three different locations at Sungai Kundang and have been sent to the Department of Chemistry (JKM) to analyse the contents and for further action," he said.

Hee said LUAS also resolved a diesel oil spill at the Putrajaya Lake at 9.35am yesterday, which resulted from a skid tank leakage at the underground pipeline of the National Cancer Institute (IKN).

"Investigations found that the diesel oil had flowed into the IKN drains and subsequently, entered the lake.

"Putrajaya Corporation (PPJ) has instructed IKN to carry out cleaning operations immediately to prevent the pollution from worsening.

"IKN has also carried out several mitigation steps, such as repairing connection pipes, installing oil pads and oil boom on the drainage system and suction of oil.

"LUAS has also requested PPJ's cooperation to install an oil boom at the oil spill area between the Putrajaya Lake and Sungai Langat to prevent further pollution," he said, adding that the incident could have polluted Sungai Langat and disrupted the Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plant's operations.

Hee reaffirmed that no water treatment plants had to suspend operations, nor any water disruption supply has occurred due to the incidents.
