NGOs: Wise decision by His Majesty

KUALA LUMPUR: Non-governmental organisations have praised the decision not to declare a state of Emergency in the country or any part of it.

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) steering committee when contacted said they praised the wisdom of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and the Malay Rulers, who had a special meeting earlier today.

They decided there was no reason to declare a state of emergency and that the government has managed the Covid-19 pandemic, which has entered the third wave in several parts of the country, well and effectively.

"We have always maintained that an emergency is unnecessary to fight Covid-19," it said.

Bersih 2.0 said following the decision, it was now time for Muhyiddin to reach out to the opposition for a Confidence and Supply Agreement that incorporates input from all parties.

"As expressed by the king, all politicians must prioritise the interests of the nation over their own.

"They need to cooperate to pass the budget so the economy can be restored and Covid-19 be overcome."

Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan also thanked the king and Malay Rulers for the wise decision.

"A declaration of emergency is sure to kill the economy. In many ways, our economy will deteriorate and subsequently be destroyed.

"It is common sense, but unfortunately not in common among the ruling politicians."

The association said people from all strata of society had spoken up against the emergency rule as there can be no valid reason for it.

"Currently, what our country is doing is good (with all the necessary measures in place) and only needs to continuously remind the people to be vigilant.

"While certain localities are labelled as red zones, stricter control is necessary."
