Covid-19 cases continue to climb

KUALA LUMPUR: The country records a new daily high of Covid-19 infections with 2,335 cases today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the daily tally increases the number of positive cases to 103,900, of which 20,035 are active cases.

All but 11 of the cases were local infections.

Kuala Lumpur logged the highest number of cases at 728 (31.2 per cent), followed by Selangor at 710 (30.4 per cent), and Johor at 412 cases (17.6 per cent).

Sabah recorded 248 new cases, Penang (58 cases), Kelantan (54), Negri Sembilan (33), Perak (26), Pahang (19), and 16 in both Kedah and Labuan.

States which recorded single-digit cases were Sarawak (six), Melaka (five), Putrajaya (three) and Perlis (one).

"A total of 308 cases (13.2 per cent) are linked to clusters in lockups, immigration detention centres and prisons," he said in a statement today.

The clusters include Jalan Harapan Prison (156 cases), Pagar Siput (128 cases), Tembok (eight), Sandakan Prison (seven), Pagar Bentong (four), Tembok Gajah (two), and one case each in the GK Tawau, Kepayan Prison, and Kolam Air clusters.

Currently, 108 patients are being treated in intensive care units, with 50 requiring breathing assistance.

Meanwhile two more Covid-19 fatalities were reported to the national Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) as of noon today, bringing the nationwide death toll to 451.

Another 874 people have been discharged from hospitals, increasing the number of total recoveries to 83,414 cases or 80.3 per cent.
