Floods strike Gua Musang; almost 300 evacuated

KOTA BARU: Gua Musang today became the first district in the state to be hit by a third wave of flooding, following heavy rains in rural areas since Sunday.

The floods forced 296 victims from 73 families to be evacuated to two relief centres (PPS) in the district.

According to the state Welfare Department's website, the evacuees are taking shelter at SK Tengku Indra Petra 1 and Balai Raya Kampung Batu Papan.

As of 8am this morning, 279 of the victims are at the school, while 17 are at the community hall.

They were moved to the relief centres in stages since midnight, after their villages were flooded.

The portal also stated that Sungai Kelantan in Limau Kasturi, Gua Musang has breached its danger level.

At 8am, the river was measured at 60.28m, which is 1.28m above its danger level of 59.00m.

Another river was also recorded above its warning level, while five other rivers were measured above their alert marks.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast torrential rain for the east coast today.

The Department issued a red alert warning for Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang, as well as Mersing, Johor.

MetMalaysia also forecast heavy rains for Terengganu (Kemaman), Pahang (Raub, Bentong and Bera), Johor (Segamat and Kluang) until Tuesday.

The department also issued a yellow alert for Kelantan; Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun in Terengganu; as well as Cameron Highlands and Lipis in Pahang. Downpours are expected for these areas until Tuesday.
