Kelantan targets planting of 3 million trees a year

KOTA BARU: Kelantan is aiming to plant three million trees a year under the "100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign 2020-2025".

State Forestry Department director Abdul Khalim Abu Samah said the campaign, which began this year, involves five categories which include rubber plantations, forest farming and fruit trees.

"The five-year campaign is to ensure forest reserves are maintained and conserved. In Kelantan, the campaign will cover timber latex clone areas among others in Machang, Jeli and Gua Musang," he said.

Khalim said the state-level campaign began recently involving the planting of merbau (Intsia palembanica) species in the Machang area.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin kicked off the campaign yesterday by planting a Merbau tree in the garden of Seri Perdana, the prime minister's official residence in Putrajaya.

In his speech, he called on the people to participate in the campaign and ensure the success of the agenda to make Malaysia green.

The campaign was also launched simultaneously at the state levels with the theme "Greening Malaysia: Our Trees, Our Life".

The campaign, organised by the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry with cooperation from the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, state forestry departments, Forest Research Institute of Malaysia and state governments, aims to have 100 million trees planted across the country over the next five years.
