PM warns against disrupting gov't efforts to curb pandemic

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin issued a stern warning to anyone attempting to disrupt efforts to manage the Covid-19 situation in the country.

Calling for calm, Muhyiddin urged Malaysians to give their confidence and full support to the government as it works hard to combat the virus.

He said this is important, as more effective steps are being taken throughout the emergency period to ward off the virus transmission.

"I also want to give a stern warning that strict action will be taken against anyone who attempts to jeopardise the government's efforts in managing the Covid-19 pandemic for the sake of the people's well-being and nation's security.

"I plead with all politicians, civil society leaders, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies, youth, university students and all layers of society to be united in facing this very tough time.

"Most importantly, our aim is only one, which is to win in the Covid-19 fight. I also hope that religious leaders and the ulama will pray for the well-being of the country and hopefully that we will be protected from any disaster," he said in a special address broadcast live today.

Muhyiddin addressed the nation after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah consented to a proclamation of an emergency due to the worrying Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The emergency proclaimed by the King, based on Clause 1 under Article 150 of the Federal Constitution, will be in force until Aug 1.

On behalf of the government, Muhyiddin also expressed the highest gratitude to the King for his concern and wisdom in consenting to the proclamation of an emergency.
