Media barred from courtrooms during MCO

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court Chief Registrar's Office has come out with a standard operating procedure (SOP) for criminal proceedings in courts during the Movement Control Order (MCO), which includes a bar on media coverage in courtrooms.

In a statement, it said the SOP was placed to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic during proceedings as the courts were open for proceedings during the MCO.

"This SOP will be enforced on Jan 27 and is applicable for every criminal proceeding nationwide.

"We hope everyone can adhere to the SOP to facilitate our efforts in combating Covid-19 pandemic in court buildings," it said.

Among the SOPs are:

- Those who have Covid-19 symptoms are not allowed to enter court complexes.

- People need to wear face mask and practice social distancing during proceedings.

- Register via MySejahtera's application before entering the courtroom.

- Only two accused's family members or friends are allowed to enter the courtroom.

- Deputy public prosecutor or counsel are not allowed to approach the translator's table during proceedings.

- No media coverage.

- Live Feed room will be provided for cases involving public interest.
