Klang Valley continues to lead in daily Covid-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR: More than half of today's new Covid-19 cases were reported in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 3,499 new infections today, Selangor recorded 1,345 cases, while Kuala Lumpur logged 511.

Selangor remains the only state to report four-digit cases.

Other states that recorded cases in the hundreds were Johor (802), Sarawak (152), Penang (138), Perak (121), Kedah (111) and Sabah (101).

This brings the cumulative number nationwide to 261,805 with 51,558 being active cases.

Of today's tally, 53.5 per cent or 1,871 cases involved Malaysians.

"70 cases reported today were linked to clusters in prisons, involving Tembok Bendera, Tembok Sungai Udang, and Seberang Prai Prison clusters," he said.

Dr Noor Hisham also said five more people had died from the virus. All five were Malaysians.

"Two of the deaths were reported in Selangor, and one death each in Sabah, Johor and Terengganu."

Among the five deaths, the youngest was a 20-year-old male in Selangor with a history of lymphoma, while the eldest was a man in Johor, aged 68, who had hypertension and chronic kidney disease.

Another 3,515 people had recovered from Covid-19 today, increasing the number of recoveries to 209,289.

He also said 263 patients were warded at intensive care units, with 118 needing ventilators.

The Health Ministry also detected 10 new clusters in Johor, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, and Terengganu.

Dr Noor Hisham said 90 per cent of these clusters were linked to workplaces.

Four of theses workplace clusters, namely the Persiaran Synergi Utama and Jalan i-Park Satu clusters (Johor), Lorong Peel Construction site and Jalil Utama Construction site clusters (Kuala Lumpur), and Lebuh Keluli cluster (Selangor) recorded three-digit cases.

One cluster, meanwhile, involved a high-risk group reported in Lembah Pantai, Titiwangsa, Cheras and Kepong in Kuala Lumpur, and Petaling in Selangor.

This cluster, named the Jalan Tun Razak cluster, was detected when its index case tested positive after a symptomatic screening.

"This cluster involves a medical centre in Jalan Tun Razak.

"As of Feb 13, 884 individuals have been screened where 26 had tested positive," said Dr Noor Hisham.
