Ministries, DVS monitoring egg supply following contamination reports

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry is working with other agencies in monitoring the local egg supply.

This follows recent reports of product recalls by Singaporean authorities of eggs from two Malaysian farms due to the presence of salmonella enteritidis (SE).

Ministry enforcement director Azman Adam said it was working with the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry and its agency, the Veterinary Services Department (DVS), as well as the Health Ministry, conducting immediate checks nationwide to ensure that there was no shortage of supply following voluntary move to recall eggs by retailers.

"Checks were also carried out to find out whether there was panic buying on brands by other producers.

"Checks also revealed that there are sufficient supplies of eggs to cover the current consumer demand," he said in a statement.

Azman said the ministry would seek cooperation from the industry should there be a recall order on eggs sold in the domestic market to ensure that there would be no shortage of supplies.

Malaysians consume an average of 900 million eggs per month, compared to monthly local production of some 1.02 billion eggs, he said.

Azman urged the public to submit complaints to its call centre 1-800-886-800, email e-aduan@kpdnhep.gov.my, Ez ADU KPDNHEP app, enforcement command centre 03-8882 6088/6245 or Whatsapp 019-279 4317.

The DVS had launched an investigation into Lay Hong's CES008 farm and CEM 014 farm owned by Linggi Agriculture following recall order issued by Singapore Food Agency (SFA) due to possible SE contamination.
