Stop work order issued on SUKE following fatal crane collapse

KUALA LUMPUR: An immediate stop work order has been issued to Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) by the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) following the mishap which killed three workers this morning.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Awang Hashim said a team of investigating officers from the department has been deployed to the scene near Puncak Banyan in Persiaran Alam Damai.

"A comprehensive probe will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the incident and determine if there were violations of legal requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

"The Act stipulates that it is the responsibility of each employer to ensure the safety, health and welfare of its employees during work, as well as that of the public at the workplace under its jurisdiction.

"The employer holds full control of any activities at the workplace, conducts risk analysis and effective risk controls before employees start work. This is to reduce safety risks on the employee and the public to deter any accidents," he said in a statement today.

Awang is the chairman of the National Council of Occupational Safety and Health which comes under the ministry.

Projek Lintasan Sungai Besi Ulu-Klang Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) had this morning confirmed that three highway construction workers from China were killed on the spot when one of the gantry crane components collapsed at SUKE.

A motorist, who was in a Perodua Bezza, was injured in the incident. Prolintas said the cause of the incident was still under investigation.
