Public masses to resume at St John's Cathedral

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cathedral of St John here will resume public masses this week on Thursday.

The Catholic cathedral along Jalan Bukit Nanas which was closed following two separate disclosures that two people had been tested positive for Covid-19 - announced the resumption of masses on its Facebook page.

It said that approval had been granted by Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Most Reverend Julian Leow Beng Kim to resume the public masses at the start of the Paschal Triduum (which also includes Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday).

"We have been advised by the Crisis Task Force that based on the Ministry of Health's recommendation and available data shows that a person with mild to moderate symptoms remain infectious no longer than 10 days after symptom onset," the post said.

"As Maundy Thursday falls after the above period of infectivity and we have received no word of any other infections beyond the two reported cases, it is the opinion of the Crisis Task Force that it would be sufficiently safe to resume public masses on the basis of strict compliance with standard operating procedures and Archdiocesan Guidelines."

Archbishop Leow, the post noted, will preside and celebrate the masses of the Triduum and Easter Sunday.

Masses at the cathedral were suspended since last week, when two people - including parish priest Monsignour Leonard Lexson - tested positive.

"Monsignour Leonard continues to be under medical supervision and quarantine and his condition is stable.

"Let us continue to offer our prayers for his speedy recovery," the Facebook post added.
