KJ: I'll decide on what post to contest once Umno elections date announced

GEORGE TOWN: Rembau member of parliament Khairy Jamaluddin says he will only decide what post to contest in Umno after the party's supreme council decides sets a date for its elections.

The Rembau Umno division deputy chief said the most important thing was for the supreme council to decide on the status of the party polls.

He, however, stressed that the polls should be held this year and not postponed any further.

"I want a decision to be made first on when the party election will be held. After that, I will decide what post to contest.

"The supreme council should not postpone the party polls and should hold it this year," he told reporters after a working visit to the Vaccine Delivery Centre (PPV) at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang here this afternoon.

The science, technology and innovation minister was asked if he would contest the party presidency in the coming party polls, as he did in the June 2018 party elections.

In the previous election, Khairy came in second with 61 votes compared to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's 99 votes. The third contestant for the position, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, only managed 30 votes.

The Umno election was supposed to be held last year but was postponed due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, the former Umno Youth chief had said that the internal crisis plaguing Umno for the past few months could only be resolved through a party election.

He had stressed that the party election, which is scheduled to take place this year, must be held before the 15th general election (GE15).

He had said the party polls before GE15 would enable Umno to face the general election with a line of leaders who have a clear mandate and can garner the support of the people.
