Navy to get 13 more locally-built Fast Interceptor Craft

LUMUT: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is expected to receive 13 more Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) for deployment nationwide.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the FICs are expected to be assigned in the ongoing Op Benteng to tackle illegal immigrants and other security affairs.

He said, as part of the first stage, the navy has taken delivery of six FICs worth RM80 million, built locally by Gading Marine Industry Sdn Bhd (GMI), specifically for use in Op Benteng.

"The company managed to build six FICs within five months. This is something to be proud of.

"We will utilise these new assets immediately to assist our men in manning the country's marine borders," he said, adding that 13 FICs worth over RM120 million are expected to be constructed soon.

Gading Marine won a public tender issued by the Defence Ministry mid-last year.

The FICs, placed under the Fast Combat Boat (FCB) Squadron, serve as an element of support for the country's maritime defence, especially for navy ships involved in Op Benteng.

Each FIC is equipped with two main engines with a water jet propulsion system, capable of reaching maximum speeds in excess of 50 knots.

The FIC is designed to be operated by a crew of five and is capable of carrying up to eight Quick Reaction Force personnel at one time.
