Covid-19 cases go back to above 3,000 today

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia notched 3,418 new Covid-19 cases today with Selangor still in the lead with 1,200 new infections.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the new infections raised the national tally to 415,012 with active cases now at a record 30,339.

Malaysia had on Saturday logged 2,881 new infections.

Dr Noor Hisham said Sarawak registered the second-highest number of cases at 587, followed by Kelantan (400), Johor (213), Kuala Lumpur (198), and Terengganu (184).

Other states which recorded three-digit new infections were Penang (145), Sabah (115), and Kedah (101).

"Perak recorded 77 new infections, followed by Negri Sembilan (73), Melaka (61), Pahang (45), Putrajaya (eight), Labuan (seven), and Perlis with four new cases," he said in a statement today.

Of the local infections, Dr Noor Hisham said it involved 3,134 Malaysians and 274 foreigners.

"Ten imported cases were reported today, involving nine foreigners."

He said Malaysia reported another 12 fatalities, raising the country's death toll to 1,533 (0.37 per cent).

"The new deaths were reported in Perak (one), Kelantan (three), two each in Negri Sembilan, Johor, Sarawak, and one each in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur."

All had a medical history of chronic ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and kidney complications, and dyslipidemia, among others.

Dr Noor Hisham noted that 345 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units (ICU) with 175 on ventilator support.

He also said 2,698 patients had recovered, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 383,140 (92.32 per cent).

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said 11 new Covid-19 clusters were reported in five states - Selangor, Sarawak, Johor, Melaka, and Kedah.

He said five of the clusters were linked to the community; two clusters linked to the education institutes under the education ministry; one cluster linked to the higher institution; one cluster linked to education and two workplace-related clusters.

The five community clusters were identified in Sarawak (Sungai Tengah, Sungai Sebemban, and Sebujok clusters); Johor (Jalan Sri Putri 12 cluster), and Melaka (Jalan Emas cluster).

Two clusters linked to the education institutes under the Education Ministry were identified in Sarawak (Sains Bakam cluster) and Kedah (Kiara Jaya cluster).

"One cluster each linked to higher institution and education were unearthed in Kedah in the Jalan Junjong cluster and Limau Karangan cluster respectively.

"Two workplace-related clusters were identified in Selangor namely the Kawasari Sembilan and Persiaran Raja clusters."

Dr Noor Hisham said with the new clusters recorded today, Malaysia now has 396 active clusters.

"A total of 10 clusters ended today."

He added that the Saujana cluster produced the most number of new cases with 153, followed by the Sungai Duan cluster (102) and the Sungai Ranan cluster (33).
