21 more people evacuated in Machang Bubok flash floods

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Some 21 people from six families were evacuated to the flood relief centre in Dewan Kampung Bukit Teh, Machang Bubok here early this morning.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafee Abd Samad said they included six children and two men with disabilities, who were brought to safety at about 12.30am after their homes were hit by flash floods.

"Until 3am, only 21 people were evacuated to the flood relief centre after flood waters in their homes showed no signs of easing.

"Since the situation put them in danger, we brought them to safer grounds," he said today.

Shafee said heavy rain for two hours since 4pm yesterday triggered flash floods in several locations in Machang Bubok which included Kampung Bukit Teh, Taman Bidara, Kampung Tasek Junjong, Kampung Maggis and Kampung Berangan 9.

The flood waters rose to between 0.5m and 1m.

The situation has since improved and the flood waters receded.

Nevertheless, police continue to monitor the situation.

Besides the flash floods, Shafee said police also received reports of storms in Kubang Semang which resulted in uprooted trees in Kampung Pelet, Kampung Petani, Jalan Guar Perahu, Taman Selamat and Kampung Bukit Indera Muda.

Several homes were partly damaged in the storm.

Meanwhile, Machang Bubok assemblyman Lee Khai Loon said they prepared food for the flood victims to ensure they had food for sahur this morning.
