Sabah school gardener faints, later tests positive for Covid-19

KOTA KINABALU: A school gardener who fainted at a school in Semporna later tested positive for Covid-19, triggering Sabah's latest Keramat cluster.

The 73-year-old man was taken to the Semporna district hospital after he fainted.

A Covid-19 test on him later returned positive for the coronavirus.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said health authorities conducted a screening on 11 people from his household.

Seven of them, comprising his wife, children, in-laws and grandchildren, were infected.

"As three of those who tested positive were also primary school teachers, further tests were also held for teachers at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Hampalan, SK Bubul as well as SK Tampi-Tampi on May 7," he said, adding that a teacher from SK Tampi Tampi tested positive.

Sabah today recorded 63 new Covid-19 cases with one death in Sandakan.

Meanwhile, Masidi also encouraged people to donate blood as the state's blood bank is running low.

Health authorities, he said, are targeting 1,800 donors every week to ensure that supply is adequate.

"Since the third wave of the pandemic struck, blood donation activities in Sabah have decreased. It worsened during Ramadan and is expected to continue until the Kaamatan festival.

"This year, we expect blood supply to decrease by 20 per cent following the cancellation of more than 200 blood donation campaigns with an initial target of 6,000 donations."
