LRT collision: Task force to probe cause, says minister [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry will set up task force to investigate tonight's Light Rail Transit (LRT) Kelana Jaya line train collision.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said they are expected to receive the preliminary report on the investigations tomorrow from the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).

The task force will then submit another report in two weeks' time to identify the cause of the mishap, he said.

"The report will explain whether it was due to miscommunication, signal error or human error. Rest assured, the experts will look into the matter.

"One train was coming at 20kph, while the other was 40kph. Some suffered broken arms and others suffered other injuries," he said in a press conference at AvenueK here today.

At the moment, said Wee, all passengers have been retrieved safely and sent to hospitals for treatment.

"Prasarana has insurance coverage for passengers, so no issue. Now our focus is for treatment for the injured passengers. We will do our best," he added.

When asked if the Kelana Jaya line train will operate tomorrow, he said he will wait for the preliminary report.

"It is too early to say."

Meanwhile, Wee said Prasarana had the experience to manage the situation as part of its Emergency Response Plan.

In the 8.45pm incident, a train full of passengers from Gombak collided with an empty train that was heading from Kampung Baru.

A total of 213 people were injured, including 47 seriously, in the incident.
