KUALA LUMPUR: The collision involving two trains on the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line is the first such incident to occur in the 23 years of the rail service.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said this while confirming that a thorough probe was being done to find the cause of the incident.
"In two weeks' time, we will identify whether it was due to error in the signalling system or miscommunication or human error.
"This accident is the first in the 23 years of the LRT's operations," he told reporters at the KLCC LRT station tonight.
A total of 47 people suffered serious injuries, while 166 others escaped with minor injuries when the two trains collided about 8.45pm last night.
The Kelana Jaya LRT line started its operations on Sept 1, 1998 when the first train travelled from the Subang Depot to Kelana Jaya.
On June 1, 1999, the second section of the route – between the Pasar Seni and Terminal Putra LRT stations – began to operate. This section included an underground stretch.
