Vaccination significantly prevents severe Covid-19 symptoms, says Dr Adham

KUALA LUMPUR: The Covid-19 vaccine has the capability to help prevent severe symptoms of the virus.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said the observation was made based on a survey on some 500 healthcare workers who were infected with the virus despite being vaccinated.

"From the surveillance, we found that only one of them fell beyond stage 4 (which requires ventilator support), while others were in stages 1 and 2 (suffered mild symptoms).

"The data showed the efficacy of the vaccination in preventing severe (symptoms)," he said in a virtual press conference today.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) had reported that an effective vaccine reduces mild, moderate and severe cases of Covid-19.

However, it said it is still possible for one to spread the infection to others without getting the disease after getting vaccinated. Hence, it is important that those vaccinated against the virus continue wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene and physical distancing.
