For safety wear double masks and face shields, says Health DG

KUALA LUMPUR: Double masking and wearing face shields should be included as part of strategies to safely and significantly reduce Covid-19 transmission within the community.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said double masking by wearing a cloth mask on top of the medical procedure surgical mask together with a face shield could provide more protection against the Covid-19 Delta variant infection.

"We need to adopt the wearing of face shields, which can be quickly and affordably produced and distributed.

"It should be included as a safety strategy to reduce the transmission of Covid-19 in the community.

"The use of a face shield and two layers of face masks can provide 96 per cent protection against the Delta variant infection," he said.

Earlier, it was reported that a new study discovered that the variant of concern (VOC), Delta, can multiply in the nasal cavity of those who have already been inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccines.

The condition is characterised as similar to that of an unvaccinated individual.
