PM: Klang Valley's vaccination rate exceeds herd immunity target

KUALA LUMPUR: The Klang Valley could transition into the next phase under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) soon.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the vaccination rate involving those who have been fully-inoculated in the Klang Valley, which is still under Phase One of the NRP, has surpassed the herd immunity target.

Ismail Sabri said as of Aug 28, a total of 89.5 per cent of the population in the Klang Valley have been fully-vaccinated while 110.7 per cent or 6,824,193 people in the Klang Valley have been administered with one dose of the vaccine.

"I was told that the percentage is more than 100 per cent because there are people outside of the Klang Valley who were inoculated at vaccination centres in Kuala Lumpur.

"Their address (residential address) is not in Kuala Lumpur but from other places.

"Since they were administered the Covid-19 vaccines at PPVs in Kuala Lumpur, we included the recipients under the Klang Valley," he said.

On the Klang Valley's potential shift into the next phase of the NRP, Ismail Sabri said it would be discussed soon.

"At the moment, the government has yet to meet over the matter since we have no cabinet yet (Ministers and deputy ministers in the government will only be sworn-in on Monday).

"Insyallah (God willing), we will discuss this matter, once the cabinet has been formed, in the Special Committee on Covid-19 which I will chair.

"Looking at the vaccination rate and percentage, the Klang Valley could move into the next phase under the NRP since we have reached the targeted herd immunity (of having 80 per cent of the population fully-inoculated).

"We will look thoroughly into the matter. Maybe other states will also move into the next phase under the NRP," he told reporters here today.

Ismail Sabri earlier visited the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur's (WTCKL) vaccination centre (PPV), which administered its one millionth dose of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine today.

CITF in a statement said this makes the WTCKL PPV the first vaccination centre under the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme (NIP) to hit the one million mark in administering the vaccine.

"This achievement contributes to the efforts in the country's recovery.

"This achievement also facilitates the efforts to provide the necessary protection for the people (against the severe symptoms associated with Covid-19) subsequently aiding in the efforts to take the country out of the crises unleashed by the pandemic for the welfare and wellbeing of the people," said CITF in the statement.

It added that the achievement of the WTCKL PPV reflected the success of the good cooperation between government agencies and the private sector.

"With 360 healthcare and non-healthcare workers stationed daily, the operation at this PPV is being led by medical officers from the Health Ministry and assisted by 13 coordinators as well as 14 staff comprising civil servants from various ministries.

"ProtectHealth Corporation is the implementation body responsible for the involvement of medical officers from

the private sector which is also known as Health Care Organiser (HSO).

"There are three HSO at this PPV namely BP Healthcare, Bookdoc dan U.N.I Klinik."
