MMA welcomes booster shots but after 80 per cent of adult population vaccinated

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) welcomes the government's decision to implement booster shots for Covid-19 vaccine recipients.

MMA president Dr Koh Kar Chai said the administration of booster shots however, should be made after the vaccination rate nationwide exceeded 80 per cent of the adult population.

"There have been studies showing the protection offered by the Covid-19 vaccines wane over time, hence booster shots will be needed.

"We also agree with the move to prioritise healthcare professionals, the elderly and those with comorbidities (who were vaccinated in the first phase) for the booster shots once we reach the required percentage of vaccinated adults," he said when contacted.

Dr Koh added MMA was also looking forward to engage with the Health Ministry on how private general practitioners could be roped into the booster shots programme.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a statement said the government would administer a third Covid-19 vaccine dose or booster shot after the nationwide vaccination rate exceeded 80 per cent of the adult population, with priority for the administration of the third dose given to high-risk groups.
