Incessant rain causes floods in 4 Sabah districts, third time in 3 weeks

KOTA KINABALU: Several districts in Sabah have been hit by floods for the third time in three weeks.

In the latest case, incessant rain since last night has led to floods in four districts.

Authorities said as of noon today, 10 areas and 12 roads in the state capital were inundated.

A statement from the Sabah Civil Defence Force said there were also landslides in Kampung Unggun Jaya, Sunny Garden, Taman Fantasi, Kampung Pulau Penampang in Sepanggar, Jalan Signal Hill, Jalan Taman Khidmat and Taman Chanyai Villa.

Kampung Sugud in Penampang, which was the worst-hit area that turned into "muddy village" on Sept 15, is flooded again.

In Kota Belud, overnight heavy rain caused the water level of three rivers to rise and it has so far flooded 39 villages.

A temporary evacuation centre at Dewan Muhibah Kampung Tombol has been activated whereby 20 flood victims from Kampung Tombol are seeking shelter.

As for Sipitang district, the rain from early morning had flooded 10 villages: Kampung Menengah Ulu Sipitang, Kampung Sungai Tiga, Kampung Naluyan, Kampung Lalang, Kampung Mesapol Lama, Sindumin, Kampung Pantai, Tanjung Nipis, Kampung Kawang and Kampung Banting.

The main road in Jalan Kampung Menangah Ulu Sipitang is impassable to traffic.

Fourteen people from five families were evacuated to Dewan Mini Mesapol, which opened at 10am today.

In the last floods which hit the state on Sept 15, three people were killed while many others had their homes destroyed after non-stop heavy rain in many areas in Penampang.

Floods had also hit several districts in Sabah on Sept 3.
