Government's effort against Covid-19 bearing fruit

KUALA LUMPUR: Vaccination efforts and public interventions by the government are bearing fruit in country's fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this was reflected in the data of daily cases, active cases, deaths, cases in intensive care units including the intubated patients.

On number of cases, he said that there was a decline of 23.6 per cent from 83,368 Covid-19 cases in 39th epidemiology week to 62,722 cases in 40th week.

The 40th week is between Oct 3 to Oct 9 this year.

"The decline is consistent since the 34th epidemiology week compared to the 39th week.

"In terms of active cases, it has declined 21 per cent compared between the 39th week and the 40th week.

"Number of deaths has also halved, at 50.2 per cent between the two epidemiology weeks and 700 deaths with average of 100 deaths daily reported in the 40th week.

"Meanwhile, there has also been a decline of nine per cent in ICU cases and 11.2 per cent in intubated cases between the two epidemiology weeks

"R-naught also dropped 0.2 per cent daily," he said in a statement today.

The number of clusters also dropped to 79 as reported in the 40th week compared to the previous epidemiology week, he said.

As of yesterday, 65.2 per cent of total population had been fully vaccinated.

In terms of hospital bed capacity for Covid-19, he said there had been a five per cent decline to 8,164 beds utilised in the 40th epidemiology week.

Usage of beds at Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) also declined at three per cent to 16,912 beds occupancy in the 40th week.

"In line with the positive development, the people must not be complacent with the country's Covid-19 situation.

"We must learn lessons from the previous spike in Covid-19 cases until it paralyzed the economy and social sectors.

"Through the Reopening Safely initiative, everyone has a part to play to break the chain of infection in the country.

"Observe the standard operating procedures and practice TRIIS (Test, Report, Isolate, Inform and Seek)," he said.
